Maria Ozawa in Mexico

One of the most recognizable faces in South East Asia, Maria Ozawa began making waves on social media with a series of Instagram posts from the popular vacation town of Guadalajara, Mexico.
The 31-year-old model/actress visited Mexico for a getaway that included a trip to La Rojeña, the historic distillery that has produced Tequila for almost three centuries. Ozawa was accompanied by other personalities such as Tim Yap, Bianca Manalo, and Charmaine Palermo

Ozawa landed at Guadalajara, where she spent the evening at the Camino Real Hotel. She enjoyed her day sightseeing and hanging with locals, before embarking to the town of Tequila, Jalisco the following morning. The trip began with the Jose Cuervo Express, a luxury ride that takes tourists straight to the town of Tequila.

“I’m so excited for my new adventure!” Ozawa shared online.
In Tequila, Ozawa and her friends were taken to the blue agave fields to learn how the harvesting of the plant plays such a pivotal role in the production of the much-beloved drink. The experience at the fields gave way to a unique tour through La Rojeña, to witness the distillation and production of tequila. - manilastandard.net

Seafarer's daughter aims for Philippines' 2nd Miss Supranational crown

For Jehza Mae Huelar, her winning the Bb. Pilipinas-Supranational 2018 crown was a fulfillment of her parent’s wishes.

Huelar said her inner strength comes from the challenges she had faced when she was young. She lost both her parents at the age of 20, a loss which she turned into one of her biggest advantages whether in pageants or in real life. Huelar won a crown on her third attempt in the national pageant.
“It was the moment that I needed to be strong no matter what life throws at me, and I became an independent woman,” the 24-year-old Huelar said during the send-off hosted for her and Miss Universe-Philippines Catriona Gray at the Novotel Manila, Araneta Center.
Huelar, who hails from Mandug, Davao City and graduated with a degree in Bachelor of Science in Finance from Ateneo de Davao University, has been appointed Ambassadress of 2018 International Assembly of Youth for UNESCO (Y4U). She was recognized by the National Association of UNESCO Clubs in the Philippines for her valuable efforts in inspiring the youth in the grassroots level through her advocacies in sports with the Maharlika Sports in Davao, expression through film with the Film Academy of the Philippines Mindanao, and health of young seafarers via Positibong Marino, a seafarers group supported by the International Transport Workers Federation (ITWF).

Being a seafarer’s daughter, Huelar strongly supports the Associated Marine Officers and Seamen’s Union of the Philippines (AMOSUP), helping draw awareness to the welfare of Filipino seamen, considered the biggest number of employed crew onboard merchant vessels around the world.

Present during the pair’s send-off were Pilipinas Charities Inc. (BPCI) chairperson Stella Marquez Araneta, Bb. Pilipinas-Intercontinental Karen Gallman, Bb. Pilipinas-Globe Michele Gumabao, Bb. Pilipinas 2nd runner-up Samantha Bernardo and Miss Supranational 2013 Mutya Datul who gave Huelar some tips for her competition.
Huelar is currently in Malopolska, Poland competing at the 10th Miss Supranational along with other 80 delegates from around the globe. If she wins the crown, she would be the second Filipina to bring home the title.

Ride-sharing company refused to give full aid

Puwersa ng Bayaning Atleta Party-list Rep. Jericho Nograles on Friday assailed Grab Philippines anew for its refusal to take full responsibility on an accident involving one of its “sleepy and overworked” drivers that left a 20-year-old University of Santo Tomas mechanical engineering student in critical condition.
According to the relatives of the victim identified as Marko de Guzman, Grab only offered a small amount as financial assistance but refused to cover his entire medical expenses, claiming that the driver is not the company’s direct employee.
“Grab as a common carrier has a legal duty of extraordinary responsibility over the passengers. They are presumed to be at fault for the negligence that led to serious personal injury on the UST student,” Nograles, a deputy majority leader, said.
Nograles said that while Grab is raking in billions in profit from its overworked drivers and unwary passengers, it has managed to free itself from any legal responsibility in the event of any accident or a crime because of lack of enforcement of laws.
“This is the result of greed. Grab makes millions in a day and would rather fatten their bank accounts than look after the welfare of Filipinos. How can our regulators allow irresponsible operators violate civil and transpartation laws?” said Nograles who had consistently fought Grab’s unfair and abusive business practices.
Nograles also questioned Grab’s operation because of its 100 percent foreign ownership in violation of the constitutional requirement that transport companies must be 60 percent Filipino-owned.
“You cannot expect malasakit from foreigners like Grab,” Nograles said.
He cited the case of De Guzman who is now fighting for his life when the Grab car he was riding crashed into a scaffolding of an ongoing roadwork along Taft Avenue late last month.
A portion of the metal scaffolding penetrated through the Grab car and punctured De Guzman’s head. The victim is now in critical condition as a fist-sized portion of  his brain had to be removed as a result of the accident.
In a post that went viral in Facebook, De Guzman’s cousin Steffi de Guzman said Marko suffered a fractured skull and had to undergo a “very complicated brain surgery.”
De Guzman is also unable to talk and function normally.
(He can’t recognize his own mother. Imagine, Marko just went out and booked a ride on Grab, then suddenly he can no longer move, speak, and can’t understand his loved ones.)
The family said Grab has offered to pay only for a fraction of the P2.5 million worth of medical expenses.

The De Guzman family said Grab made several offers but not enough to cover his hospital bill. They also claimed that Grab’s policy only gives out a maximum of P200,000 for accidents.
“Marko lost his future, his chance to get a job and earn for himself and his family. He lost his capacity to learn, to understand, to recognize his loved ones,” Steffi said.

The family is now raising funds for Marko’s medical expenses.
But in a statement, Grab Philippines said it is “saddened by this terribly unfortunate incident.”
“We continue to pray for his immediate and successful recovery,” the company said.
Grab Philippines Spokesperson Leo Gonzales said they have been in constant communication with the family and offered financial assistance.
“While the family has not accepted any of our offers, we are continuously reaching out to extend adequate support that would cover Marko’s hospital expenses. We are also assisting them in claiming their insurance, which is offered to all Grab passengers and driver-partners,” Gonzales said.
Nograles, meanwhile, said that according to reports, the driver, who was later identified as Allan Sarmiento, crashed into the scaffolding because he was too sleepy to drive.
Sarmiento, has been permanently banned from the Grab platform. He and another driver await arraignment.
“This is not an isolated incident. There are many others. There will be more. The main reason is, drivers working themselves to death to reach their quota thereby endangering their own lives, lives of passengers, and lives of the general public.”
Nograles also questioned Grab’s refusal to cover the full medical expense of De Guzman because in its website, it claimed that Grab is providing a Group Personal Accident insurance for all Grab car rides.
It claims that all eligible drivers who are registered with GrabCar and Passenger(s) on board with a valid GrabCar booking are covered with personal accident insurance to compensate the Insured Person(s) for bodily injuries arising from a GrabCar accident.
“Grab, however, cannot pass liability to insurance companies. Our civil laws provide that Grab is directly responsible for all negligence unless they have exercised extraordinary diligence. Grab is not exercising diligence by pushing exhausted drivers to drive beyond humane conditions. Unless our regulators address these legal and safety issues, everyone is in danger,” Nograles added.

LeBron cheered in win over Cavs

New York City - LeBron James made a triumphant return to Cleveland and received a standing ovation from supportive fans before leading the Los Angeles Lakers over the Cavaliers 109-105 on Wednesday.
James scored 32 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and made seven asasists to spark the Lakers, who closed the contest with an 18-6 run to win for the sixth time in seven games.
“We cranked up our defense in the fourth quarter,” James said. “They played a heck of a game but we kept our composure. We’re a young crew. We keep getting better.”
It was an emotional night for James in his first game back leaving the Cavaliers for the Lakers in July, but nothing like his 2010 return after departing Cleveland for Miami and fans, feeling betrayed, booed him.
He left Miami for the Cavs in 2014 and made good on his vow to make the Cavs into champions, so “King” James was treated royally this time.
There were cheers when James trotted onto the court for pre-game warm-ups, a huge standing ovation when he was introduced and, after James scored on the Lakers’ first possession, a video highlight tribute to huge applause.
“To come back and get the reception I got, it means a lot not only to myself but my family,” James said.
“My 11 years I played for this franchise I tried to give everything I could on and off the court.”
The Lakers improved to 10-7, their best record since April 2013, while the Cavs fell to an NBA-worst 2-14.

Imports Harris, Travis want title, not awards

Imports Harris, Travis want title, not awards
Both Magnolia import Romeo Travis and Alaska reinforcement Mike Harris couldn’t care less about winning the Best Import award.

That’s because their eyes are all set on potentially leading their respective teams to championship in the 2018 Philippine Basketball Association Governors’ Cup.

As the Hotshots and the Aces look forward to their anticipated Finals’ encounter ahead, Travis and Harris are itching to get their teams over the hump.
Though they are figuring in a tight battle for the Best Import award, for them, it’s the championship that matters most.
“I don’t really care about that award,” said Travis, who already won a Best Import award in his first tour of duty in 2015, when he ironically led Alaska to the Finals. “I just want to win a championship.”

Harris echoed Travis’ sentiments as he stated that despite all the attention they are getting, the Finals will not be all about the imports.
“This isn’t about Mike and Romeo,” said Harris. “Championships are way more important.”
While Meralco’s Allen Durham, the two-time reigning Best Import, and Barangay Ginebra’s Justin Brownlee are also candidates for the award, it is expected that the award will either go to Travis or Harris.
The two imports get to test each other for a full best-of-seven finale showcase starting Dec. 5.

Cavaliers claim scalp of Builders; Responders edge Agriculture five
Metro Manila - Armed Forces of the Philippines continued its hot streak, claiming the scalp of National Housing Authority, 90-81, at the start of the second round of the 7th UNTV Cup held over the weekend at the Pasig City Sports Center.

The AFP Cavaliers, who topped the Group A elims, expectedly got impressive numbers from Darwin Cordero and former PBA player Boyet Bautista to extend their winning streak to six games since the first round of the tournament designed only for the country’s public servants.
AFP had a cold shooting in the first half that saw the Cavaliers fall behind by 12 points (46-34) but rallied midway in the third behind the efforts of Cordero and Bautista to help turn things around.
In other games, Philippine National Police continued its surge from a 1-2 start by chalking up its third straight win with an 82-79 win over Department of Agriculture while PITC outlasted Judiciary, 74-72, in the event offering P4 million to the chosen charity of the champion team.

For leading the team with 22 and 17 points, respectively, Cordero and Bautista shared the Best Player award. They also combined for six steals, five rebounds and two blocks.
Three other AFP players scored in double figures enough to take a 63-61 advantage after outscoring the Builders, 29-15, in the third canto.
Like the Cavaliers, the PITC Global Traders made a decisive run in the third to take command on the way to their third win in six matches in Group A.

Ollan Omiping and Ronnie Serrano led PNP’s charge in the second frame to seize the initiative before quashing DA’s fourth quarter rally.
Omiping boosted his bid for another MVP trophy in the event organized by UNTV president and CEO Dr. Daniel Razon by erupting for 25 points apart from tallying six rebounds, two assists and two steals. Serrano chipped in 13 points.
Standings:
Group A: AFP (6-0), PNP (4-2), Senate (3-2), PITC (3-3)
Group B: Malacañang-PSC (4-1), NHA (4-2), DA (3-3), Judiciary (2-4)

Pacman teases rematch with Floyd Mayweather

Pacman teases rematch with Floyd Mayweather
New York City: Filipino veteran Manny Pacquiao revealed Monday he has spoken with Floyd Mayweather about a possible sequel to their 2015 superfight, but said no decision would be taken on a rematch until the New Year.

Speaking in New York to confirm details of his January 19 fight against Adrien Broner, Pacquiao said he had discussed a rematch with Mayweather during a recent trip to Japan.
“When I met up with Floyd in Japan, we talked and he said he wants to come out of retirement to challenge me,” Pacquiao said.
“All I know is fighting in the ring and entertaining people. That’s my job. Floyd has come out of retirement and we’ll see after this fight.”
Mayweather scored a unanimous victory over Pacquiao in 2015’s “Fight of the Century”, which was largely regarded as a let-down despite being the highest-grossing fight of all time.
Since then, speculation about a possible rematch between the two welterweights has flickered, with Mayweather saying in September he was ready to fight Pacquiao.
“I’m coming back to fight Manny Pacquiao this year another 9 figure payday on the way,” Mayweather wrote on Instagram.
Meanwhile, Pacquiao, who will be fighting in the United States for the first time in two years in January’s bout, said Monday he remained solely focused on Broner before any return with Mayweather.
“We cannot underestimate Broner and this fight,” Pacquiao said. “We will discuss anything with Floyd Mayweather after that.”

Pacquiao, 39, will face Broner at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Pacquiao holds the World Boxing Association’s regular welterweight crown, a step below US unbeaten WBA ‘super champion’ Keith Thurman, after stopping Argentina’s Lucas Matthysse in July at Kuala Lumpur.
“I have missed fighting in Las Vegas. It has been a second home to me,” Pacquiao said. “Returning to the MGM Grand Garden Arena to defend my world title against Adrien Broner is an exciting way to stage my homecoming.”
Pacquiao, 60-7 with two drawn and 39 knockouts in a career that began in 1995, turns 40 in December while American Broner is 33-3 with one drawn and 24 knockouts.
Pacquiao, the only fighter to win world titles in eight different weight divisions, has continued fighting after reversing a decision to retire in 2016.
Early Manny retirement?
Broner, however, said Monday he planned to send Pacquiao into permanent retirement.
“I have paid my dues in this sport, and now it’s time for me to get mine,” Broner said. “I get more views than everybody when I fight. A lot of people are going to see me pack off Pacquiao into retirement, and without his belt.”
Last month, Pacquiao signed with adviser Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions group after being promoted by Top Rank’s Bob Arum, Haymon’s main rival, for the past 14 years.
The move ensures Pacquiao will have chances to fight the best in the welterweight division as Haymon’s fighters include Americans Thurman, 28-0 with 22 knockouts; World Boxing Council champion Shawn Porter, 29-2 with one drawn and 17 knockouts, and International Boxing Federation champion Errol Spence Jr., 24-0 with 21 knockouts.

7 Beets Benefits For Your Health, From Losing Weight To Better Sex

FYI: Beets are one of those foods you love, hate, or forget they even existed. The nutrient-dense superfood is getting a second look as more research reveals the beet's health-boosting effects on the mind and body. Adding more beets to your diet can help boost longevity, from aiding weight loss to preventing chronic diseases, like cancer.

Beets have a rich nutritional profile that provides a plethora of health benefits. Also known as blood turnips, beets are an excellent source of fiber, vitamin C, magnesium, and folate. The underrated vegetable is an acquired taste, but the nutritional powerhouse can add years to your lifespan if consumed on a regular basis.

Below are 7 benefits of beets that boost your physical and mental health.

1.Boosts Weight Loss

Beets help you detox and lose weight because they contain no fat and are a good source of dietary fiber — half soluble and half insoluble. These two types help fight fat by maintaining proper bowel function and lowering cholesterol levels for weight loss. Similarly, beets are rich in magnesium, a mineral that supports optimal nerve and muscle functioning, which could be beneficial for losing weight.

A 2011 study found high levels of magnesium led to higher levels of testosterone — a hormone that promotes fat tissue loss and increases in muscle. Since muscle burns more calories than fat, maintaining or building muscle can help with shedding the pounds. Moreover, beets contain phytonutrients known as betalains — betanin and vulgaxanthin — which are effective in reducing inflammation and supplying the body with antioxidants. Betalains also support detoxification, which may contribute to weight loss.

2.Boosts Strength

Beet juice can be valuable if you're looking to boost endurance during your workout. Previous reasearch  has found those who drank beet juice before working out were able to exercise for up to 16 percent longer. Researchers believe the nitrate content in beets, which turns into nitric oxide, reduces the oxygen cost of low-intensity exercise while enhancing the stamina for high-intensity exercise.

In other words, nitrate-rich food can increase exercise endurance.

3.Improves Digestion

Beetroots have been linked to improving poor digestion by exciting the nerves in the intestines and enhancing the body's ability to digest food. A cup of beetroot contains 3.4 grams of fiber, which makes beets a good source of fiber. Fiber makes you regular because it bypasses digestion and travels down to the colon, where it feeds friendly gut bacteria or it adds bulk to stool.

4.Improves Sexual Health

The superfood has been labeled as "nature's Viagra" due to its nitrate content. Similar to Viagra, beet intake increases nitric oxide formation, which dilates blood vessels and boosts circulation to the penis. This leads to better erections for men during sexual intercourse, and helps them last longer in bed.

5.Lowers Blood Pressure

Beetroot juice can effectively lower blood pressure in men. In a study. published in Nutrition, men and women who drank 17.6 ounces of beet juice, which consisted of about three-fourths beet juice and one-fourth apple juice, had a lower systolic blood pressure six hours later. However, when researchers limited their analysis to men, they found a significant reduction of about 4.7 points among those who drank beetroot juice versus the placebo.

Researchers believe it's beets' high nitrate content that produces these heart-healthy effects. The body converts nitrates from sources like beets into nitric oxide in the body. The nitric oxide then relaxes blood vessels and increases oxygen and blood flow, therefore, lowering blood pressure.

6.Prevents Cancer

The phytonutrients in beets, like betalains, have been found to be cancer-preventive. Animal studies have shown beets inhibit carcinogen formation and increase the production of immune cells and body enzymes that help stop cancer from developing. Specifically, a 2013 study found beetroot extract reduced multi-organ tumor formation in several animal models when added in drinking water.

The science is still murky with humans; a study published in the Australian International Clinical Nutrition Review claimed a 50-year-old man recovered from lung tumor, which clinically corresponded to lung cancer, after consuming beetroot. After six weeks, the tumor disappeared, and four months later, the man gained back over 20 pounds of weight. Researchers are still hesitant on making bold claims about the vegetable.

7.Boosts Brain Health

Beets are considered brain food that can slow the effects of dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Drinking beet juice increases blood flow to the brain of the elderly, which may fight the progression of dementia, according to a 2010 study. A high-nitrate diet led to an increase in blood flow to the white matter of the frontal lobes — the areas of the brain linked to degeneration from dementia and other cognitive disorders.

Folic acid in beetroot can help protect against Alzheimer's by preventing damage to the hippocampus, which the brain devoted to memory and learning. In an animal study, mice with Alzheimer's-like plaques in their brains were fed a diet that included a normal amount of folic acid. Those fed the folic acid diet had more brain cells in the hippocampus compared to their folic acid-deficient counterparts.

Researchers suspect that high levels of homocysteine in the brain may damage the DNA of nerve cells in the brain. Folic acid is believed to work by helping protect the brain by allowing nerve cells to repair this DNA damage.

It's important to talk with your doctor before substituting drugs with beets to treat these various health conditions.

Casio's Transformers G-Shock is Optimus Prime's ticking heart

As leader of the Autobots, you'd think that Optimus Prime would always know what time it is. However, Casio, in collaboration with Transformer toymaker Takara Tomy, Casio has unveiled a special edition Transformer with a G-Shock watch installed right in his heart. The promotion celebrates the 35th anniversary of G-Shock, and the 35th anniversary of the Transformers in 2019, Casio said.

You can use it in a "pedestal" modeto flaunt the watch, or transform the toy into a robot, also to flaunt the watch. We're not sure Optimus Prime would approve of his new glorified watch holder status, but it does come with a couple of blasters, too. While you're wearing the watch, you can insert a Matrix of Leadership to replace it.

The watch itself, a DW6900-IV model, is red with a blue strap in the same color theme as the robot, and has a subtle transformer logo built into the LCD. Casio and Takara Tomy teased the potential watch last year, releasing a mini-movie collaboration (above) that looks exactly as you'd expect.
