rookie policeman faces probe over alleged rape of drug suspect's teen daughter

BREAKING NEWS: A cop/rookie policeman in Sampaloc, Manila is facing investigation for allegedly raping the 15-year-old daughter of a drug suspect.

The teen's mother said Sunday she saw the police officer instructing her daughter to buy liquor before bringing the teenager to a motel in the Sta. Mesa district last October 26.

The girl, in a statement, said she was forced to give herself to the policeman to clear her father from drug allegations.

Metro Manila police chief Director Guillermo Eleazar confronted the policeman with curses, saying the girl tested positive for genital lacerations.

"Yung kalokohan na ginagawa mo kaya tayo nasisira dahil sa iyo!” Eleazar said, jabbing his finger inches away from the suspect's face.

(Misdemeanors like yours destroy us.)

The newbie policeman denied the accusation, claiming the girl's parents want to discredit him.

The parents said their daughter could not interact with anyone out of fear for her life after the alleged sexual abuse.

The teenager has been placed in the custody of the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

The policeman accused of raping her, meanwhile, is under the custody of the Manila police station 4. He will face criminal and administrative complaints, said Eleazar.

Science Reveals 7 Hobbies That Make You Smarter

In case you missed it, through several centuries, humans believed that your talents could only be god-gifted. They thought we were born with a certain IQ level, and that was it. Today we can even calculate the IQ of animals!

Science has revealed that we can fine-tune our intelligence and augment our capability. Imbibing new skill-sets helps our brain build neural pathways that benefit its functioning.

We have gathered 7 hobbies that increase your IQ, proved by science:

1. Play A Musical Instrument

A research suggests that regularly playing an instrument changes the shape and power of the brain and may be used in therapy to improve cognitive skills.

This is the most important of all the activities, since it has the greatest effect. It increases your imagination, observatory power, communication, mathematics, etc.

Many people state that participating in team sports has just as much effect on your brain. However, the one particular area where this hobby surpasses all others is: it provides strength to the corpus callosum which forms a link between the hemispheres of our brain.

This benefits our memorizing power, functioning of the brain, skill in execution, etc.

2. Read Anything

It’s no accident these highly successful individuals read fiction. And research shows it might not be just for fun.

I’m a huge fan of this point in particular. Reading is therapeutic in ways more than one. Be it The Song of Ice and Fire series, The Lord of The Rings, or the recent Business Weekly, the effect is the same. It helps to calm your nerves and soothe you. This activity adds to all 3 kinds of intelligence- crystallized, fluid, and emotional.

It helps in stringing together information, solving issues, navigating problems better, recognizing patterns, understanding human beings, etc. In the business world, this accounts for great skills as an HR.

3. Exercise Regularly

A review was conducted of studies that assessed the effects of acute bouts of physical activity on adults’ cognitive performance.

You cannot do 20 push-ups once in three months and expect to see results. No. Regularity is key. You do not have to have an extreme work out session everyday. Even if it’s for 15 minutes a day, do it.

It charges the cells with BDNF, improving your memory, concentration, and understanding.

It is important to note that if you remain seated for too long, it does more harm than good. So, mix it up.

4. Learn A New Language

Instead of whiling your day away on crosswords, teach yourself a new language. Studies state the ones who speak more than one language are better disposed to tackle puzzles than others.

It fine-tunes your brain and makes your memory sharper. Even your organizational skills will seem positively affected.

This also helps your resume significantly. So many jobs require you to know a language besides your mother-tongue. So, it’s a heavily win-win situation.

5. Test Your Cumulative Learning

Most of us are familiar with the concept of memorizing an endless number of pages before an exam. Often, we forget this information soon enough because we don’t really need it.

When you imbibe a new language, your intelligence shoots up because it requires cumulative learning. You learn words, punctuations, syntax, in a bulk and have to repeat it in order to retain it.

If you use this technique in your daily life, it will help significantly. Maintain a pocket-book to jot down things of importance, and keep going through those snippets in your free time.

6. Work Out Your Brain

Anything that exerts your brain: mystery games, crosswords, jumbles, riddles, etc. increase neuroplasticity.

In simpler words, it allows the brain to organize itself better.

If nerve cells differ in their response, our mental horizon widens. It helps us see the causal relationship of emotions and hones our cognitive skills significantly.

Neuroplasticity, being involved in impairments like tinnitus, can even help us fight some conditions like stress and depression.

7. Meditate

The Wall Street Journal published “Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences“. It spoke of when scientist Richard Davidson conducted an experiment on the Dalai Lama and his fellow monks. He wanted to test if certain mental waves could be produced on demand. While meditating, when asked to concentrate on compassion, Davidson found all of them in deeply compassionate states.

The greatest impact of meditation is manipulating your emotions. You can help the brain re-wire itself, and call any feeling to action, whenever you need it. It makes for a stronger human being.

We see how all these hobbies affect our brain, so we can use them wisely to become better and more efficient versions of ourselves!

Regular Self-breast Examination Is Important

  • How can I test myself for breast cancer?
  • How do you know if u have a lump in your breast?
  • How often should you self check for breast cancer?
  • When should you start getting breast exams?
These are some of the frequently asked questions regarding breast and health issue. The DOH [Department of Health] has emphasized the importance of regular self-breast exam and the critical role of screening in the early detection and treatment of breast cancer among women.

In observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month with this year’s theme, “United We Fight,” Health Secretary Francisco Duque III noted that early detection of any changes in the breast and seeking immediate consultation would increase one’s chances of successful treatment.

“We urge women to regularly do self-breast examination and immediately visit the nearest health center should she (sic) notice any cause for concern,” said Duque.

He said health care professionals had the confidence to perform breast screening.

“For those who are already diagnosed with the disease, we encourage you to get treated at the DOH hospitals and receive holistic care through advocacy groups,” said Duque.

A breast self-examination is a method to detect any noticeable changes in one’s breast.

Based on the 2015 Philippine Cancer Facts and Estimates, breast cancer is the most common (20,267 cases) and the 3rd leading cause of cancer-related deaths (7,384 cases) among the Filipinos, next to lung and liver cancer.

As part of the response to this public health concern, the DOH established the Breast Cancer Medicines Access Program in 2011 in seven access sites, namely:

Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center; (2) East Avenue Medical Center; (3) Rizal Medical Center; (4) Amang Rodriguez Memorial Medical Center;

(5) Bicol Regional Training and Teaching Hospital; and (7) Philippine General Hospital. From 2011 to 2017, more than 4,000 patients with breast cancer were given free cancer drugs under the program.

This year, access to breast cancer medicines will be expanded to include the following health institutions: (1) National Kidney and Transplant Institute; (2) Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center; (3) Region 1 Medical Center; (4) Bicol Medical Center; (5) Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center; (6) Zamboanga City Medical Center; and, (7) Southern Philippines Medical Center.

In line with this, the DOH conducted a forum to increase breast cancer awareness through education on self-breast cancer screening, lectures from esteemed societies and conduct of mass screening.

Different groups and patient partners were enjoined to attend to foster camaraderie and teamwork among various stakeholders.

Duterte’s newest close-in aide

GUESS WHO: President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday named Philippine National Police Sr. Insp. Sofia Loren Deliu as his new close-in aide, taking over the job of the President’s former top aide Bong Go.

“This is the one who replaced Bong, stand up,” he said, ordering Deliu to promptly stand up.

Duterte, who stood as wedding sponsor to beauty queen Deliu, made the remarks during the conferment of Philippine Quality Awards in Malacañang.

For his part, Go said the police officer would not be given the title of Special Assistant to the President. But she will take some of Go’s former functions as Duterte’s top aide.

“Deliu will be as an aide,” Go said in a text message sent to media Wednesday.

He explained Deliu would accompany the President as his close-in in all his engagements.

He added Deliu would not be referred to as SAP, stressing the title was only specifically given to him before as a former Palace official.

Since the start of Duterte’s presidency, Deliu has been serving as the President’s Junior Presidential Security Aide-de-Camp.

In 2015, Deliu, a Filipino-Romanian, finished among the Top 15 semi-finalists in the Miss Philippines Earth pageant.

Last March, the President even served as a primary sponsor during Deliu’s wedding.

Prior to his announcement, initial reports said Davao-based lawyer Charmalou Aldevera will be the one to take over Go’s post.

Worry no more: Christmas food prices stabilizing

The Department of Trade and Industry announced that the prices of food for the traditional Christmas celebration have remained stable as the competition among manufacturers is keeping a lid on prices.

“For Christmas products, we say that prices are generally stable, especially for the commonly used products like pasta and sauce,” Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez told the Kapihan sa Manila Bay forum in Manila.

And it appeared that consumers were being put off by the high prices of vegetables that they were steering clear of them, with the result that vegetable prices were going down, the department said.

Manufacturers compete for a greater share of the market for their products during the holiday season, and that’s healthy competition that helps to keep prices stable.

“It’s really a competition for market share,” Lopez said.

And given the choices a consumer has for Christmas food items, several manufacturers would also think twice before raising prices, he said.

“The consumer will always choose value for money so that manufacturers will be afraid to raise prices,” Lopez said.

Filipinos buy Noche Buena products for the traditional Christmas Eve celebration like pasta, fruit cocktails, ham, tomato sauce, mayonnaise, and cheese.

On Oct. 14, the Trade department released a list of suggested retail prices for Noche Buena items.

But Lopez said the prices of some items had already increased prices, particularly high-end ham.

He said the peso-dollar exchange rate was also starting to stabilize as the Filipino workers abroad had started sending money to their relatives.
